The Signal-Man - An Opera

Member Nick Planas has been working on an opera, The Signal-Man, based on the short story but with the addition of characters from the Signal-Man's past (as described in the text). It is being performed by a cast of 6 professional singers supported by an orchestra of professionals mixed in with senior students, in his home town of Brackley on October 25th. Wherever possible he has tried to use Dickens' own words, which has proved quite a challenge musically. The opera lasts about 50 minutes and he is hoping to take it on tour next year.

A rare opportunity to see inside Dickens Swiss Chalet.

Steve Martin (Chatham & Rochester Branch Secretary) recently gave an interview to the BBC about the Dickens Swiss Chalet. It was used for their news website, see below:

There is also a rare opportunity to see inside Dickens Swiss Chalet. You can visit anytime between 11am and 3pm on Thursday 12 to Sunday 15th September, no booking, just turn up. The chalet is located in the garden of Eastgate House in Rochester High Street. Medway Council's Heritage Team members will be there. The rare opening to the public of the chalet is being organised by the Charles Dickens' Chalet Stakeholder Group (CDCSG) working with Medway Council. Several Rochester & Chatham Dickens Fellowship members are part of the CDCSG.
